Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

Can I collect payment for unpaid rent

I moved in with my ex-fiancee 3 years ago. We both signed a lease for the house and agreed to each pay half of the rent. I paid for all of the rent as well as all other household bills. I've asked him for three years to start helping out and he finally moved out instead. He claimed half the rent for two years on his taxes even though he never paid any. I also loaned him money for getting his license back, a truck he bought, glasses, contacts, car insurance, etc. I have all the cancelled checks and bills. He admits to oweing part of the money. We also have a 3 year old son that he has never paid anything for. What if anything can I collect?

Re: Can I collect payment for unpaid rent

Absent any written agreement, it is unlikey you can get anything. The lease was joint so you were both liable even though one of yoou was paying. If you have a child and he has moved out, you may want to consider getting some type of support order. That court can look at how much you ahve supported him to make a determination of an award of support. They are just facts to enlighten, not necessarily to sue over.
