Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Indiana

I've been renting a home since April 2011 and have had plenty of sketchy encounters with my landlord. He never wanted a money order for rent and never wanted to fix anything. My lease was up January 2016 and he refused to inform me that he wasn't going to give me a lease for the 2016 year. So i attended a first time homebuyers class to finally purchase my own home. When i couldn't find a home i wanted, i asked the landlord would he ever be willing to sell it and he said sure. July 2016 I offered to purchase the house and toldbthe landlord since I wasn't on lease that I have to hold a couple of months rent to make the down payment. He agreed. A few weeks later he called asking for rent and I had explained to him again what we had agreed upon and he gave his daughter my number so we could discuss it. She explained to him again what he and I had agreed upon and he said OK. All of july comes and goes and in August he asked for rent so I gave him the rent fearing that I was breaching a lease that I forgot I didn't even have for the year. So I shopped around for another home and thinking that the landlord was full of it. I still didn't find anything so I gave my realtor the landlords daughters number and they discussed what it takes to buy the home and the daughter and the landlord got irrate saying they wouldn't pay any fees because it was me who came to them to purchase the house. So I said no thanks and told my realtor I'd find another home. The land lord in September said home is no longer for sale and that he wants 3 month s back rent. I paid 950 from April 2011 to August 2016 and offers him his asking price (75000) when the house is only worth 39900. I told the daughter when she kept harrassing me for her fathers rent, that i havent received a lease nor a new rental registered sticker for the home and had never been informed that he he wanted to have mW on a month to month lease. Now I've been served with papers claiming I own him 2850 in back rent when the only month I hadnt paid was September while myself,the realtor and the bank went through the home buying process only for home to renig on a verbal agreement. The 2850 he claims I owe is exactly the amount I paid to move in which was first last and security deposit plus turning all utilities in order for him to fix up the property before i moved in. I've paid rent on time always and any fee he presented me with during the past 5 years. I even paid for him to rent a sewer rodding machine sewers to rod his own sewer out after a storm. Twice!
