In general the use of skateboards on public roads or sidewalks in Iowa is governed by municipalities. That is, you will have to find out what restrictions apply to riding skateboards in your town or city. Municipalities are exempt from negligence claims by people injured on skateboards under Iowa Code ch. 670, and of course one must obey all traffic laws, there may be age requirements, insurance requirements, use of protective gear requirements, places where you cannot use a skateboard, and adult supervision requirements. Given the fact that skateboarding is classified as an activity with a substantial risk of injury in Chapter 670, you might not have much luck in getting paid if you got hit by a car.
