Legal Question in Consumer Law in Kansas

I received a check from us depart. of treasury for 14k. Im not quite sure why i got it. However, i went to website they mentioned possibility of fraudulant checks going around. So on their offical website (US dept. of Treas.) I went through the characteristics of things to watch out for on the frauduant checks and none of them characteristics match my check. So while I was on their website they have a check verification system. So I did the verification It said I was ok and funds were ok. So still two days later i called their customer service on there check verification to run the check through verify over phone this time. Again, they told me funds were ok to be released. So, does that mean Its legit. I just need to know 100% before i cash it. I wont take part in anything illegal nor can i afford the financial or timely complications of something like that ( more importantly neither can my family). Do i just go cash it and where at. Also do I need to have a bank account to do so.

The wise thing to do would be to have anaccountant see if they can determine why you got the check, just before or after depositing the funds into a bank account. Don't use the monen until the accountant tells you it is okay.

Good luck
