Your first court date in municipal court is considered an arraignment date. You may enter a plea. I strongly suggest you have an attorney; or if you cannot retain one, plead not guilty and ask for a new court date so you can contact an attorney. A guilty plea could result in jail time, fines, and a theft conviction on your record. Feel free to email me if you want to discuss this.
