Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Kansas

My mother passed away with few worldly goods and two small bank accounts that were also in my name. Do I need a lawyer to settle her affairs? Is probate necessary in this case? I'm the only heir and can't imagine anyone contesting.

If they were joint accounts with survivorship, the money in the accounts is probably already yours. You probably do not have to pay her bills, unless they were your bills too. The creditors can open a probate estate, if they want, but they very se seldom do.

Good luck.
