Legal Question in Criminal Law in Kentucky

Odometer Fraud----What can I do?

My boyfriend took my car and drove it without asking me first. Then, he tried to change the odometer so I wouldnt know he had drove it. He ended up breaking it so it doesnt count miles anymore. I havent drove it since I found out what he did, but now I am worried about being charge for odometer fraud if I ever decide to sell it. How can I repair what he did? What rights do I have? Will I ever be able to sell my car? Is my car worth LESS money now that he's done this? And is there anything I can do legally against him?

Re: Odometer Fraud----What can I do?

The law regarding odometers is meant to apply mainly to car dealers or others who mislead folks into thinking that a car is newer or less used than it is. This is fraud. You are not intending to mislead anyone. Speedometers break all of the time. Sometimes people do not get them fixed. When you sell the car there is a place for you to indicate that the speedometer does not reflect the actual mileage. Get the speedometer fixed and when you trade or sell the car, you can tell the new buyer what happened. Keep the repair bill with your car paperwork and have the repair shop note the mileage of the old odometer on the bill. Tell you boyfried not to mess with your car anymore.
