Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana

''Going to Court''

My son while in college in lafayette, was in the ice cream parlor, and took some ice cream. He was picked up by the campus police, who call the local police. They arrested him and I got him out. This happened since March, and he has never gotten a court date. One lawyer told me maybe they droped the charges. How can I find that out without hiring a lawyer.

Thanks Lynne

Re: ''Going to Court''

Dear Lynne: If the City of Lafayette police detained your son, it is likely that the Lafayette City Prosecutor's office may have a record of his detention, and a determination of what, if any charges were lodged against him. However, I would start with the Lafayette Police Department records division, and obtain a copy of the record of his arrest or detention. Records should be able to help you if you can give them the time, date and location of his arrest. After receiving the police report, take a look at the disposition. If the matter was referred to the city prosecutor's office, give them a call. If the matter was dismissed, it should say so on the report.
