Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana

Is This Legal?.

My child was convicted of misdemeanor theft and placed on probation. Two days later, an officer showed up to arrest him on a drug distribution charge. He left with him and they brought him home a few hours later. My son was told that the charges would be dropped if he help them to convict others. He was told not to tell his attorney or probation officer and we have not. This has made us leary. Why did the D.A. not know about these new charges on the day we went to court? Are the officers actions legal? We want to cooperate so my child can turn his life around but we are scared and confused. This is difficult because by helping to police, he has to associate with people that could violate his probation. By not helping, he goes to jail. What should we do?
