Common Law Marriage in La.
Does La. law recognize common law marriages? If not, has the state recognized it at a prior period of time? If so, when was is repealed? What rights do individuals have after living together for 16 years?

There is no common law marriage in Louisiana, and never has as far as I know and I have been practicing law 29 years.
With no recognized marriage contract, you become like partners. Unfortunately if you cannot trace who paid for what and how, it becomes very difficult to divide property, unless both names are shown as owner.
If your partner is killed in an accident, you cannot sue for damages as a spouse could, and if there is no will, and no children, you could not inherit from your partner's estate as a spouse might.
