Legal Question in Employment Law in Maine

employer said I breached confidential information

I was in the process of turning in my supervisor for doing alot of things that weren't right. Like mishandled cash, or making me use her password to log onto the computer and many other things. They terminated me in the end, saying I looked at confidential information on her hard drive, but they admitted they had no evidence. I was supposed to be protected under the company's whistle blower protection policy. Can they fire me for this offense with no evidence? Can I sue for negligence or for them trying to destroy my reputation?
