Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

From custody to adoption

Our grandaughter Harli has been with us 7 years, we have full custody, through the courts with both parents signing her to us. Now she would like to be adopted and change her name; can you tell me how I go about doing this?

Re: From custody to adoption

You file a petition for adoption in the circuit court of your county. It's a somewhat complicated procedure, and you should retain an attorney who specializes in adoptions to do this.

And if the parents object, it probably wouldn't be granted.

But since you have full custody already, adopting her doesn't enhance the relationship legally. If it's just about the name, you can file a petition to change her name without an attorney and much less expensively.
