deffamation of character

can my previous employer tell other emloyees, unemployment agencies etc about an affair I had with another employee? Can he use this information against me in any way or tell any other persons in order to hurt me?

Maryland is an at will employment state. This means that in order to take action there needs to be an agreement or contract with the employee. Certain federal law may apply where discrimination has occurred.

In order for defamation to occur the fact which is being publicized must be false. Casting matters in a false light may be considered as defamation but damages must be proven.

You use the word "defamation" in your subject heading, but if your previous employer's comments are the truth, it isn't defamation. If the affair factored into your job performance or the reason for losing your job, it's appropriate for him to do so.
