Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

I moved to a new town in November 2011 and got a new phone number. Since then we get daily calls from collection companies looking for 2 different people. We have repeatedly told them that we are not the people they are looking for, and we are only the new owners of that phone number. Is there any legal way to get them to stop harassing us? They obviously think we are lying about not being the person they are looking for, and continue to call.

You have a few options. The FDCPA forbids contacting third parties about a debt (in this case, you're the third party). If they call again, you can tell them over the phone to stop all attempts to contact you. You should also send the collection company a letter by certified mail stating that you want them to stop all attempts to contact you. If they still keep calling, you can sue them to make them stop. If it gets that far, you may want to contact an attorney. Good luck.
