Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

I received a summons from a debt collector, in short, I was in a bad relationship and I was under the impression that my ex had used the money I had been giving him to pay our bills. He has been hiding all contact from the debt collectors so I was unaware that the debt was still outstanding. I want this nightmare to be over with, I would like to send a check with the amount that is owed with my answer to the summons, should I send the check to the collection agency, or their lawyer?
