Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Massachusetts

My daughter is 17, never been in trouble. She is being charged with A&B and destruction of property over $250.00 in a private complaint. The court ssays I make too much to afford an Attorney and I cannot afford one on my own. I am nervous as the judge threw out terms like felony and 2 year inprisonment. What do I do?

From what you have said this sounds like a criminal complaint. I do not know if you are in juvenile court or the regular adult court This depends on the age when the offense was committed, not her present age. I will assume you are in the regular District Court.

I understand people have money problems. That said, I never advise anyone to deal with a criminal matter without counsel. This does not sound like a particularly serious offense, but I don't know. Regardless your daughter should have counsel. Resolutions are usually better when a lawyer is involved, at least that's my experience.

When money is tight you have to deal with priorities. This is a big one to me (I have daughters too). Many of us take credit cards, and sometimes relatives help. Assuming you really don't qualify (you can ask again next time) find the money. That's my advise.
