Legal Question in Medical Malpractice in Massachusetts

Example: Plaintiff went to doctor for what could be diagnosed as a staff infection. Doctor failed to properly diagnose the infection and did not prescribe any antibiotics. 3 days later plaintiff passes away from an e coli infection she was unaware she had, but that would have been treated had the doctor properly treated the staff infection. Can the negligence of the doctor in failing to properly treat the staff infection the proximate cause of the plaintiff's death?
