Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Massachusetts

Can anything be done about skyrocketing rent in the Boston area?

Judging from the fact that voters did away with rent control in 1996 and by the number of apartments for rent in Boston classified ads, Boston is a city virtually owned by landlords. Rent for the apartment that my roommates and I occupy is about to increase by $600 ($2100 to $2700). There have been no changes in size, location, items included in the rent, or the building construction. Other apartments in the Boston area are increasing rent as well, some at unbelievable rates. When using a realtor to find an apartment, not only do renters have to pay outrageously high move-in costs (1st mo./last mo./security), but they must pay a finder's fee, too. I know Boston is not the only place that has a high cost of living, but it appears that the cost is making astronomical leaps, with no end in sight. I think landlords are taking unfair advantage of renters--many of whom in Boston are students. Can any legal action be taken, including reinstating rent control??

Hi!! I agree with youi and also find Boston and its surrounding areas rent to be astronomical. Not only do you have to pay a excessive amount in rent but also parking spaces/tickets. However, this question is not really aimed for the legal department to answer but to the legislative department. We need the rent control bill passed again- other wise it is getting ridiculous. But untill the lsndlord does nothing illegal (unfortunetly raising rent is not illegal) then take this matter up with your state rep.
