Legal Question in Tax Law in Massachusetts

My boyfriend got his taxes done with Liberty Tax back in March 2014. Since he was unemployed, he got $700 and owed nothing according to them. Today, the day after Christmas, we got a note from IRS now saying he owes $3,000 on his taxes. In other words, Liberty tax messed up big time. My boyfriend went over EVERYTHING and gave them EVERYTHING that could remotely related to anything tax or tax-related. We have no contract here saying that we would responsible for their errors. What course of action can we take? I feel like Liberty Tax should be responsible for their mistake. My friend got her taxes done at H&R many times and the one time, they messed up - they paid for everything. Any advice would be helpful

Without more information it is difficult to provide an analysis. Most tax services are responsible for only the interest and penalties not the tax itself.

My question is did your boyfriend provide information on his unemployment income. Unemployment income is taxable.

The first thing I would do is meet with a CPA or tax preparer to see what can be done about the tax and then seek costs from liberty.
