Legal Question in International Law in Mexico

Mexican citizenship

I am a United States citizen and am going to marry a Mexican citizen while I am here in Mexico. If we get married in Mexico, will I automatically have dual citizenship? Will he then be able to come to the United States with me? Thank you.

Re: Mexican citizenship

Good question. The answer is no and no.

Citizenship is not as simple as getting married. Contact the Consulate,--this is pretty common, and they will be able to tell you what to do to get Mexican citizenship.

Further, you can get yourself into a whole mess of trouble if you don't sort this out before you get married: a spouse is NOT automatically entitled to come to this country, even though you can apply for spousal visas, it is a LONG....LONG...process and the steps are particular.

Take a look at the Family Immigration Site : http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1310.html

Re: Mexican citizenship

The Mexican Law permits double citizenship for Mexican citizens who apply for a foreign citizenship. The process is long and takes various years to prove residency and reasons of marriage.
