Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Can a credit collection agency collect on a decade old debt from art van furniture? The debt was made in 2001 and the amount was $1800.00 but the collectors say now I owe almost $7000.00 and they have started a garnishment. Is this legal? And is there anything I can do to stop this?

If they started a garnishment, I'm guessing they sued you within the 6 year statute of limitations and are just now getting around to collecting. You should check with an attorney to see if thats the case of not. If they are just now suing on the debt, its likely stale and dismissable. Call me to chat. Tim Klisz
