is it legal to sell a car for $3800 then put you sold it for $1000? Im in michigan

Sales tax is charged based upon the sales price. To supply false information in the paperwork is a crime. No, it's not legal.

I am not sure what you mean by "put". I think you might be asking about putting the amount of sale on the title and then going to the SOS. If that is the case, do not misrepresent the amount that was paid for a vehicle in any way especially to a governmental agency. So if you mean after a sale of a vehicle for $3,800.00 is made, can you represent to the Secretary of State that it was only sold for $1,000.00? If that is the case, the answer is no. Do not do that. Just pay the taxes due or make the person who is buying the car to pay the taxes due. Never lie on those forms, while you might get away with it, you could also get into trouble.
