If you have been handed a lawsuit you must file an answer within 21 days. Did you sign an agreement with them? Where is the documentation to support their claims? Remember there is no court date for a lawsuit until you file an answer to their lawsuit in court. You must file a written response. Calling them up and talking to them is not filing an answer. Do not wait or you will be punished. A nursing home is prohibited from cannot require a third party guarantee of payment as a condition of admission or continued stay. It does depend upon the definition of responsible party as it appears in the contract though. There is a Michigan law on point as well but you need to look at the contract.
