In the state of Michigan, when a person finds a piece of property with identifying marks and contact information on it, but sells it instead of using the contact info, is that then theft?

The standard answer given by thieves to law enforcement when questioned about receiving\concealing stolen property is "I found it". Given the fact that you could have returned it to the rightful owner but sold it instead indicates an inclination to deception.

For example, if you "found" an Ipod on a desk chair in an empty class room, that's theft.
