Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Child Support

Wife and I were going through a divorce, in which time, my new girlfriend stopped taking her birth control in order to have a child with me thinking we would stay together no matter what happened down the road. Since then, she had the child after I requested we didn't at this time, telling me, I'm ok, I want it and am moving from Mich to Ariz to live and raise him, I need nothing from you. A year later, I get child support papers in the mail, she lives with another man and I have seen my son once in almost 2 years and now expected to pay $250 biweekly for the next 17 yrs. What do I do, impossible to afford and am already $1000 behind in payments and getting notices of bench warrants and license rovoked. PLEASE help! How can a woman, decide to have a child, move accross the country and demand (legally) that I pay her $70,000 for the next 18 years of MY life and I have nothing to say about it???

Re: Child Support

You did have something to say about it when you had sex with the mother. Now, you have nothing to say about the fact that the baby needs to eat, be clothed and have shelter.

Re: Child Support

Parents are required to support their children . . . p.e.r.i.o.d. I assume you are old enough to know the consequences of unprotected sex and the consequences of not living up to your legal and moral responsiblities. Your child had nothing to say about the decisions to conceive him and bring him into the world, so maybe you should start thinking about what is best for your innocent and helpless child. If you want to see him more and be a part of his life, make arrangements to do so.

Re: Child Support

A couple of thoughts. First, the courts have not been open to suggestions that because something is unfair to the guy, that he should not have to pay child support. Second, tell her that you want a relationship with the child, expect the child to be sent to you or you'll come to the child during school vacations, etc. You may find a rewarding relationship with your child or she may decide that you are such a pain that the new guy in her life adopts the child getting you off the hook for support.
