Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

termination of parental rights

My sons father has been in and out of prison since our childs birth. i have had no contact with him for a year.I would like him to give up his parental rights to our son. Is there a form i can get that has to be signed by him that will give up his rights as a father? i understand he would have to agree to this but i have no idea where to find such paperwork. please help.

Re: termination of parental rights

You should do this through an adoption lawyer. A simple renunciation of parental rights may not be accepted by a court. Aside from custody and parenting time, the effect of the renunciation might operate to cutoff child support. A court probably would find that not in the child's best interest. Only, if another man were to step forward and assume financial responsibilty (adoption)for the child would the court allow this. For more info, please contact my office at (248)851-3171.
