Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

I have court tomorrow morning for a probation violation stemming off my missing a meeting due to cancer treatments for my dog. I was picked up at my house one night and brought into custody to see a judge, where I plead not guilty, and said that I would be hiring my own attorney. In the last two days, the vet bills have made me unable to afford my attorney. What are my options for tomorrow morning? Do I just go in and represent myself?

Hello. So very, very sorry that you are facing such complex problems & worries - sounds very upsetting.

At court, you may submit an application for a public defender (who is an attorney, you understand). If your finances are limited such that you can choose an experienced private attorney with whom to confer, I urge you to consider doing so, too, & right away. In my professional work it is common for people to ask me to give them that sort of 'limited' attorney help & guidance about their very private legal & other related personal issues. In my years of experience the sooner that a person asks me to confer with him/her, the more likely it is that the problems are likely to have a more positive outcome (v people who ask me to guide them 'at the very last moment'...).

All the best to you.
