Sorry to hear about this. Theft is a misdemeanor crime. Certain criminal offenses can have a serious impact on immigration status. You need an experienced attorney and fast. Get ahead of this thing. Let your attorney help you determine the best way to proceed.

A theft offense may have a significant impact on your future if you are convicted. As a result, there is no such thing as an insignificant offense. You should always contest such charges vigorously to preserve your record. I am often approached by people seeking to remove offenses from their record after the fact. In most cases, they do not realize that the law does not favor expungements and any conviction can last a lifetime. Accordingly, you must retain counsel.

A theft under $500 is a misdemeanor and is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $1000 fine. If you have a clean record, often a resolution can be negotiated that keeps the offense off your record as a conviction and allows for it to be completely expunged later. However, you must have vigorous representation to ensure that occurs.
