Legal Question in Criminal Law in Mississippi

Can a lawyer be of any help after someone is already incarcerated? Maybe assist with getting out on house arrest? This is a non-violent, first time offense. The inmate has high blood pressure and anxiety, and takes medicines for these conditions, but was took off his anxiety medicine when incarcerated. He has been in the med in the jail for days at a time, and also has to have a nurse see him daily... He has been incarcerated since July 2 at a county jail, has not been moved to a prison yet. Sentence is 3yrs, would like help getting him out early, house arrest or best option is this a possibility?

Yes. In some cases there are valid grounds to set aside the conviction under what is known as a "Motion for Post Conviction Relief". This Motion must be filed within a certain time frame following conviction however. Also, in some cases it is possible to go back to the sentencing Judge and point out the current situation and request remission or reduction of a sentence, or to request suspension of the balance of the time ordered for the incarceration. You should contact competent and experienced criminal defense counsel in your area to determine if there is a chance for any relief in your situation.
