Legal Question in Entertainment Law in Mississippi

Using my name without permission.

Can a major motion picture use my name without asking my permission? Yes, the character is based on me and my actions, though not accurately. My main concern is that there is now negative remarks/stories about this character (which is my name!) on the internet. I did not ask for this notoriety and I don't want it. If I had been asked and agreed to it, I would accept the consequences, but I was not. No one tried to get in touch with me. However, I did speak with the author of the book that this movie is based on back in 1997, I believe. Do book rights transfer over to different media? I did not expect all of this at the time. If I do have a case, how long do I have? The movie came out early 2002. They did change the names of other people in the movie and they had the option of using someone else's name.

Thanks for your time.
