Legal Question in Business Law in Missouri

Copyright Legal Advice

I am a writer and would like my work published. I even have one manuscript that I'm in the process of sending to a ''cartoon studio''. But before I start faxing my work ,I wonder should I have my manuscripts copyright. The online literary agent and publishing companies reassure me I have nothing to worry about. It is rare that they steal your ideas and run with them. I have my submission form from the ''cartoon studio'', I read over it myself without legal help . I somehow feel reluctant to send off anything without having it copyright. I really need your advice!!!

Re: Copyright Legal Advice

From the moment that you create a written work and fix it in a "tangible medium of expression" your work is copyrighted. Although you may need to register your copyright which you can do through the copyright website (www.copyright.gov), your work is copyrighted at the time you put it on paper (or save it to disk). It is a good idea to register your copyright. In most cases, publishers do not steal your work, but it is still a good idea to get the copyright registered.

Keep in mind that a copyright is different from a trademark and different still from a patent. In some cases (like, for example, plans for an invention) a copyright for the designs does not fully protect you.

To fully understand copyright law you need to find an attorney who handles intellectual property issues.
