Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

I might soon be diagnosed with early-stage paranoid schizophrenia. I'm in the state of Missouri. What can happen to me because of the diagnosis, as long as I'm not violent or suicidal? I have joint custody of my son, and I can care for him fine-- will I lose custody of him? Can I be forced to go to the hospital?

Depending upon the severity of the symptoms the repercussions vary. You can be left alone, or you could be involuntarily placed under a guardianship and conservatorship, wherein you would have no right to choose your housing, medical care or the use of your finances. Most people are somewhat in the middle. As far as custody goes, it depends agains upon your symptoms, the efficacy of your treatment and the position the other parent pursues. You might want to address your estate plan before you get diagnosed.

Good luck
