Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

legal guardianship

Appox. 3 months ago, I was asked to take care of a 15 year old boy while his mother went out of town. She call a week later stating that she was not coming back. The father is in the area but wants no part of the boy. His grandparent are in the area, but have not shown any real interest in taking the boy. His 17 y.o. sister is living in the area, but the cops found alcohol and drug paraphenalia there and he is not allowed/ to go over there without adult supervision. We see this as a long term issue and wonder if getting legal guardianship will help us out finacially, and also help the boy out as far as his security goes. thanks.

Re: legal guardianship

I think you would find a guardianship to be very useful in your situation. Untill you have some kind of legal authortiy over the child his parents could demand that he return to their custody at any time. Also, without some legal authority you cant make any medical decisions for him.
