Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

If you were married in El Salvador (U.S. Citizen wife and Salvadorian husband), then both moved to the U.S. and have been living here for 2 years, do you have to go back to El Salvador to get a divorce? Most local attorneys tend to believe that the law in El Salvador doesn't matter to the state you live in, in the U.S., you would still be considered married and would be able to file for divorce according to the laws of the state you live in. I think I remember the attorney in El Salvador mentioning that we would have to go back to El Salvador to get a divorce, but am hoping to avoid this if at all possible. Does it matter if we just get a divorce in the U.S.?

Under Missouri law, you can be divorced here. Then, El Salvatore should recognize the Missouri Judgment.
