Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

My son nd hs ex-girlfriend found out she was preganant abut 11wks ago and they had a fight and she ahs already moved in with another man. We have tried being supprtive and whaen she talks with us she is agreeing that they need to wor together as te childs parents but then totally changes her mind. She told my son that he could go to the first doc appt and hear the babys heart beat and see the baby if they do an ultrasound. She informed him the other day that he was not allowed to go that her new boyfriend is going and she might tell him if she feels like it when she gets back. My son wants to be there for his child and be responsible but this back and forth with her is killing him. can he go to the dr appt and be included with this process. This is his first child and very important to him.

I am sorry to hear of your son's situation, and it is sad that this type of thing is all too common these days. Your son has absolutely no legal right to go to the doctor's to hear the baby's heartbeat or see an ultrasound. Once the baby is born your son should file a lawsuit to determine paternity and also to provide him with specific legally enforceable rights concerning the child. He could be awarded joint legal and joint physical custody of the child, and there will probably be a child support order entered. I have had a ton of experience with situations like this, and I can tell you from experience that your son will continue to have serious problems with this "ex-girlfriend" for a long time. But, if your son wants to be a father to the child and if you want any chance of being in the child's life, then your son must take legal action. You or your son may call me for a consultation if you do not already have an attorney.
