What are you referring to when you say you are "waiting for your permanent visa"? Did you apply for adjustment of status already? If so, based on what eligibility category?

If you have not applied for adjustment of status & only aspire to get a grencard one day, then you cannot work on a visitor (B-2) visa & you must depart the U.S. by the date given upon your admission.

If you marry a U.S. citizen, even if you overstay your visa, then you can apply of adjustment of status. Otherwise, even one day of illegal presence will be a bar to adjustment of status, and, 180 days or more of illegal presence will bar you from re-entering the U.S. for 3/10 years. Meaning, even if you apply for an immigrant visa at a U.S. Consulate (assuming you are eligible to apply for one under the limited categories available), your immigrant visa application could still be denied.
