What can an employer legally reveal in reference checks with another employer?

I am an unemployed RN who is actively seeking employment. I recently interviewed for a State job and was notified by letter that I was no longer being considered for this job. It was based on my previous State employer's reference information. The letter stated that my other State employer revealed information that caused me not to be considered for this job. First of all, what can an employer legally reveal to another employer about me? Is it legal to go into my personal files to reveal information about myself? What can I do to the person that revealed this harmful information (whatever it was)? I was a good employee for 7 years and gave 2 weeks notice before I quit. I was not fired from my State job. I need to know what to do as I am basically being black balled in the State of Missouri because of this previous employer. I need suggestions as to what to do and how I go about getting something done to prevent this previous employer from hindering me from getting a job. I am in desperate need of a job and because of this State employer, I am unable to work as an RN anywhere right now! Your help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to request, from your previous employer, a service letter. There is a specific statute on this, that basically requires you to send a certified letter to the manager of your old job, requesting a service letter. Once you have this, you will know what info your employer is releasing. So long as they are telling the truth, you will have a difficult time pursuing this, and unfortunately, your chances of learning what your previous employer is REALLY saying about you are slim.
