Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

advice regarding credit card debt

Thank you in advance.

I have had perfect credit for 15+ years until three months ago.

Two years ago my NYC landlord decided he wanted my rent-stabilized apartment.

Legally he could not just take it, so he literally litigated me out of existance.

Paying for 8 lawsuits took my small savings and most of what was on my credit cards.

I was able to hold on untill three months ago.

I am in arrears for ...$60,000.

My small business is gone as is my phone and health insurance.

I finally have been given a 'buy-out' which stupid but unavoidable.

It was the only way to stop the lawsuits.

I need to consult an attorney regarding how to handle this.

If I pay most of my my credit cards,

I will have nothing left with which to try and regain my life.

And my credit will be ruined anyway.

Bankruptcy makes me sick to my stomach.

My accountant/tax attorney has passed away and I have no attorney now, and no one to recommend this kind of legal advice.

Ant thoughts will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: advice regarding credit card debt

You have a complicated situation and whether bankruptcy or an out of court workout with your creditors is the right option for you depends on various factors, and is not something you are going to find the answer to on the Internet. You need to meet with an attorney experienced in bankruptcy and debtor-creditor matters and have a detailed consultation. While you can obtain a general overview of your options in an initial free consultation with our firm or another firm, to get advise that goes beyond a general overview and you probably will need to hire an attorney knowledgeable in bankruptcy and debtor-creditor matters for a paid consultation in which the attorney will review relevant any relevant documents (such as collection demand letters, etc.), review your credit report from 3 major credit reporting agencies, status of your payment of taxes, any liens & lawsuit filings against you, discuss the situation with respect to your business, personal asset info., etc. and provide you with the attorney's evaluation of your situation and recommendations (preferably in writing).

You can obtain free general information regarding bankruptcy and debtor-creditor matters from the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on our website at www.starrandstarr.com/faqs.htm.

The foregoing response is provided as general information of interest to readers of these postings and is not intended as legal advice for your situation. You should consult with an attorney regarding your options.
