Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

As co-executrix of our mother's estate, we contacted a creditor to inform of her demise. We were told to send a copy of her death certificate, the account would be closed, and we would not hear from them again. We assumed they wrote off the debt. We have since been contacted by a national collection agency "on behalf of said creditor." Are we liable for the debt? There are no assets with the exception of a mobile home (no land) which has just been sold and is to be split 6 ways. We maintained the home until its sale with our personal funds. We would appreciate your insight and knowledge on this matter. Thank you. C
