Legal Question in Tax Law in New Jersey

Tax Refund Recovery after 3 years

Back in 1987 my son was killed in a car accident coincidentally during tax season in April. I filed every 3 years back then which means that I would have filed in 1987 for 84'-86'. It turns out that I didn't mail out my tax forms that year because of absent mindedness from the shock of my son's death. I am due about 6000.00, is there anyway that I can recover this?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: Tax Refund Recovery after 3 years

Since the returns were not filed you may have a chance. Normally, you are limited to seeking a refund only 3 years after the return is due. This usually applies to filoed returns. So, by not having filed, you may be able to by-pass the statute of limitations on refunds. File anyway and see what happens.
