When a Qualified Personal Residence Trust matures is there any way to transfer the ownership back to the original owners?

Yes, there are many ways. The beneficiaries of the QPRT can sell it or potentially even gift it back depending upon what's best. Often times the beneficiaries will lease it back to the Grantor.
