Re: responsibility of certain bills

New Mexico is a common law state which means that the "community" established by marriage is responsible for debts which are reasonable and necessary. Medical expenses fall under that category. This means the surviving spouse may be responsible for the deceased spouse's medical bills. Most institutions will negotiate and/or forgive some of the bills in some instances, and there may be public assistance available. Contract the administrative department at the hospital and discuss the matter with them. If it's UNM, there will be an ombudsman who is available to assist you. Also, don't overlook any veteran's benefits, social security, or other sources of funds such as life insurance, etc.
