Legal Question

Contractor's work not up to standard

My question is regarding contracting with a home improvements contractor and finding that as the job progresses the quality of the work is substandard. Is this a minor breach of contract? Are there any remedies available? Is it grounds to break the contract? If I throw the contractor off the job am I now in breach of contract? Thank you for your help.
