Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

I had an accountant who for about 7 years charged $250 for my personal taxes. I had a legal settlement and myself and friend were using the same accountant. We both had the legal settlement. We were both being charged $250.

Because there may have been a little extra work in preparing our taxes the accountant said it may be a "few extra dollars, not much."

When we both received our bill it was $1500, EACH. Another words, he charged us $2500, split between us for his "extra work." Mind you, THIS WAS NEVER IN WRITING THAT THE COST WOULD BE SO MUCH MORE. No where did he put this in writing. My friend and I asked and it was never provided.

No the accounting firm is claiming to take this to collection.

a) Can they ruin my credit?

b) What are my legal rights?

Thanks.

Marc
