Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York
Money owed to me
I am owed $7345.00 for work that I have done for a client in New York City. I have invoices outstanding from August through December and have contacted the client many times to get paid without any luck.
The client is a not for profit health insurance company.
I have had to borrow money to pay bills and have gone to their office to meet with them with no luck.
My first question is where do I go to sue them for the money (i.e. small claims, etc. etc)
My second question is can I seek out additional compensation for time, mental anguish and also for the interest that I must pay on the loans I have taken out against that money??

A. The jurisdictional limit in small claims is $5,000. The jurisdictional limit in Civil Court NY is $25,000. If you want to cut your fee to $5,000, you would sue in small claims in any borough of the City of New York. Otherwise, commence an action in Civil Court.

A. No. You can seek damages for the money owed for work, labor and services together with interest from the date of the breach, together with court costs and reasonable disbursements.
