Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

My wife pleaded not guilty to shop lifting . The only thing they did was say don't get in trouble for 6 months and you will not get in trouble. I told her they don't just do that. If you plead not guilty they would have set a trial date. What do you say?

Your wife was offered an ACD - Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal, no trouble for six months and her case will be dismissed.

Usually in Nassau County an ACD ("ACOD" in Nassau) is granted if the amount taken isn't excessive and she has no priors.

Tell her to behave, because they track ACODs in Nassau- if she is caught again, they may very well re-open the first case.
