Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My brother in law went an had a temporary order of custody, and an order of protection granted by a family court judge in Steuben county NY. There was a hearing date set for April on the matter. His ex went days later to the same courthouse in front of a different judge, to get temporary custody of both of their children, this judge ripped up the original paper from my brother in law and ordered that the mother get temporary custody. My question, How can this happen without and type of hearing on any issues?

You are getting second hand information. It is impossible to determine what occurred in his case. Your brother in law needs a lawyer to protect his rights and possibly file an appeal. However, he needs to do this ASAP to avoid problems with deadlines.
