Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York
When my boyfriend moved in with me, the agreement that we had was that in exchange for rent, he would fix up my home. He did do a few things, but for the most part all he did was rip things apart and then leave them with the promise that he would do it "eventually" Then he would say he lost interest in doing them. I approached him a few times telling him that if he did not want to fix things then he needed to start paying rent. He would always respond saying he was broke, that I treated him terribly, so why should he fix things? I don't know how I treated him badly as I paid for everything and he never paid a dime. I finally kicked him out after 6 years (yes I was stupid). My question is: Can I take him to court to pay for a contractor to fix the mess he left? I have a half finished wall, my ceiling is torn apart, etc. etc. Or can I sue him for his fair share of what his rent would have been? We did not have a written contract, just a verbal. Or should I just cut my losses?

Cut your losses and move on.
You can sue him in small claims court. Where is he going to obtain the money to pay you?
