Hi,

if you lose a civil suit in new york can you go bankrupt & avoid paying judgement?

Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. There is a concept of a "non-dischargeable" debt. For example, if you forget to return a $6000 necklace after a photoshoot and then you "lost" it so you can't return it, with the result that you end up on the receiving end of a judgment for $6000, you don't get to duck the debt by filing bankruptcy.
