Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

My family and I are in the US J-1 and J-2 visas, respectively. We have stayed for more than the initial period of 2 years and have an extension to stay an extra year. We will travel to our home country soon for a visit, and return briefly to the US to finish up my work before we return permanently to our home country. We are all eligible to get a new J-1/J-2 visa stamp for our passports with our extended DS-2019's, and I'll definitely need to get mine renewed as I'll be working. However, we don't plan on returning to the US for more than 90 days, and my family is eligible for the visa waiver program, which is free unlike the J-2 visa renewal. Is it possible for them to return on the visa waiver program, or must they travel on J-2 visas?
